ASTM A689 Alloy Steel Round Bars

Astm A689 Round Bars

ASTM A689 Round Bar grade is a AISI 4130 steel containing chromium and molybdenum as strengthening agents. The steel has good strength and toughness, weldability and machinability. The characteristics of the AISI 4130 steel is: High strength and toughness, High hardenability, Good heat intensity, Good machinability, good weldability and can be heat treated. 4130 steel alloy is used primarily in the construction of commercial and military aircraft and ground support systems as well as automotive, race cars, off road, hydraulic tools, and machine tool applications. It is an intermediate strength material. It is ideal for general use when welding and moderate tensile properties are required. AISI 4130 Steel carries the term "Aircraft Quality" (AQ) which means it is generally acceptable for use in aircraft parts, but still subject to magnetic particle inspection after machining.

Scope And Manufacturing

ASTM A689 specification is for hot-wrought steel bars, round bars, to be used for the manufacture of general-purpose springs such as coil, torsion, and leaf. The hot-wrought bars shall be furnished in the as-wrought condition and shall conform to the general requirements excepting that the spring steel bars shall not be marked by hot or coldstamping unless specified by the purchaser. The steel shall be made by one or more of the following primary processes: open-hearth, basic-oxygen, or electric furnace. The primary melting may incorporate separate degassing or refining and may be followed by secondary melting using electroslag remelting or vacuum arc remelting. Where secondary melting is employed, the heat shall be defined as all of the ingots remelted from a single primary heat. The bars shall be free of injurious defects and shall have a workmanlike finish consistent with good hot-rolling practices for bars intended for use in springs.
