ASTM B462 Forged Fittings

ASTM B462 Forged Fittings contain nickel, chromium, molybdenum and copper contents which together help in providing excellent general corrosion resistance. Because of good resistance to corrosion, crevice corrosion, and pitting, this stainless steel alloy is widely used for manufacturing tanks, heat exchangers, process piping and pickling equipment. Alloy 20 forged fittings are used in various applications throughout the chemical process industry, pharmaceuticals, synthetic rubber, plastics, industrial heating equipment, pulp and paper manufacturing.

Scope And Manufacturing

ASTM B462 specification covers Alloy 20 forged fittings intended for corrosive high temperature service. A sufficient discard shall be made from each ingot to secure freedom from injurious piping and undue segregation. Requirements for forging (done by hammering, pressing, rolling, extruding, or upsetting), hot working, and heat treatment are detailed. The material shall conform to the chemical composition prescribed for carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, silicon, nickel, chromium, molybdenum, copper, columbium, tantalum, nitrogen, iron, cobalt, tungsten, vanadium, titanium, zirconium, aluminum, yttrium, and cerium. The material shall meet the requirements specified for the mechanical properties including tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation. The forgings shall conform to the specified sizes and shapes. The material shall be forged by hammering, pressing, rolling, extruding, or upsetting; it shall be brought as nearly as practicable to the finished shape and size by hot working; and shall be so processed as to cause metal flow during the hot-working operation in the direction most favourable for resisting the stresses encountered in service.
