ASTM B517 - Welded Pipe

ASTM B517 covers Inconel Welded Pipes within its specifications. These ASTM B517 Welded Pipes exhibit high tensile strength properties along with good resistance towards corrosion. Inconel 600 Welded pipes are manufactured by putting the material through series of rollers to make it into flat rolled alloy which is further put through an automatic welding process, and thus the welded pipes are formed of desired length, size and finish. These ASTM B517 Welded Pipes come in various forms and with different ends which are used for various purposes in various applications. The Inconel 600 Alloy displays excellent qualities of resistance towards oxidation and corrosion, hence this material is well suited for application in extreme environments subjected to high pressure and kinetic energy. Inconel Welded Pipes are made by processing the material through different rollers and welding machines. A wide steel plate can be made into several smaller diameter pipes by slitting the plate to the proper width. These new edges need to be inspected for lamination especially if the plate was not previously inspected. Refractory, slag, and other impurities trapped in the solidifying liquid steel plus some solidification impurity concentrations generally cause these laminations in the steel plate. These chemistry differences which are found to be abnormally high, generally causes weld solidification issues while completing the long seam.

Chemical Composition Limits:-

ASTM B517 Welded Pipes should adhere to all the chemical requirements specified in ASTM B517 specification, like chemical composition of nickel, chromium, iron, manganese, molybdenum, cobalt, aluminum, carbon, copper, boron, silicon, sulfur etc.

Elements Composition Limits, %
Inconel 600
Nickel 72.0 min
Chromium 14.0 to 17.0
Iron 6.0 to 10.0
Manganese 1.0 max
Carbon 0.15 max
Silicon 0.5 max
Sulfur 0.015 max

Mechanical Properties And Other Requirements:-

Grade Tensile Strength min, psi (MPa) Elongation in 2 inches or 50mm or 4D min, % Yield Strength (0.2% offset), min, psi (MPa)
Inconel 600 80 000 (550) 30 35 000 (240)

ASTM B517 Welded Pipe properties are anisotropic, difference in all three coordinates, the transverse strength and toughness are generally just less than the longitudinal, and the through thickness toughness can be much less for not so clean steels. The angle of the weld to the axis means that the pipe properties are a cosine vector with the axes the properties found in the pipe rolling and transverse directions. The actual tensile properties however are usually close to the average of the two directions.

Flare Test: - The Flare test should consist of test specimen (one end of tube among the lot of 100) with the help of expanding tool having covering an angle of 60 degree, until the specified outside diameter of the tube is increased atleast by 30% from the original. During this process, the tube should not exhibit any cracking through walls.

Grain Size: - An n extended (transverse) sample exhibiting complete wall thickness of annealed alloys shall adhere to the average grain size as specified in ASTM B517 specification.

Hardness: - In stress-relived conditions when annealed ends are specified for tubing, the hardness of the ends should not cross the limits as specified in ASTM B517.

Hydrostatic or Nondestructive Electric Test: - Every tube should be put through either hydrostatic test or nondestructive electric test. Within the mentioned specification limits of outside diameter of 1/8 inches (3.2mm) and thickness of 0.015 inches (0.38mm), each tube should be tested to an internal hydrostatic pressure of 1000 psi. (6.9MPa). Fiber stress calculated using this formula should not exceed the specification limits.

Flattening test:- A section of pipe not less than 4 inches (102 mm) in length should be capable of withstanding, without cracking, flattening under a load applied gradually at room temperature until the distance between the plates is less than 5 times the wall thickness. The weld should be positions at 90 degrees from the direction of the applied flattening force. One pipe per lot should be examined this way. Superficial ruptures resulting from surface imperfections should not be cause of rejection.

Transverse Guided Bend:- If the pipes manufacturer gives an option of transverse guided bend, it should be as a substitute instead for flattening test. Two bend specimens should be taken transversely from the pipes or the test specimen taken from test plate of the same material.

Specimen Preparation: -

Tension test- The tubes in the final condition (temper) of production are taken as specimen for tension test, and are tested in the direction of fabrication. Tubes are tested in full tubular size or longitudinal strip with reduced gage lengths. The tension test should be performed on stress-relived tubes prior to annealing the ends.

Hardness test- The hardness test is performed on the inside of the tube near the end or on the specimen cut from the end.

Workman Ship, Finish and Appearance: -

ASTM B517 Welded Tubings are individually covered so that the premium quality of material is retained and there are no damages in the last stages of production. The Tubings should be uniform in quality and temper, commercially straight, smooth and free of any imperfections.

Inspection: - The tubes should be inspected as agreed upon by the purchaser and the manufacturer.

Rejection and Rehearing: - The tube not adhering to the ASTM B517 specification or to authorized modifications should be subjected to rejection. The rejected specimens should be preserved for not less than 3 weeks from test report, and the manufacturer may claim for rehearing within that stipulated time period.

Certification: -

If it is mentioned in purchase order or the contract, then the manufacturer should be able to produce a certificate stating that the material has been manufactured and tested and inspected again with respect to the specification. It should also note the test results of the specimen samples which meets the specification requirements, and should be displayed as and when required.

Product Marking:-

ASTM B517 Welded Tubes are tagged along with the imprints relevant to the job information which also contains information about the delivering destination like heat number, size, material, and part number.
